How live voice-to-voice AI screening actually works

“AI interview” gets used for everything from chatbots to recorded questionnaires, so let us be precise about what happens in an InstaCruit screening: a live spoken conversation between your candidate and an AI screener, in real time. It is a first screen, not a hiring decision, and the recruiter runs every interview that follows.

1. The candidate clicks a link

No account, no app, no scheduling. The invite link opens a lobby in the browser where the candidate checks their camera and microphone and, importantly, explicitly consents to recording before anything starts. Any device, any timezone, retakes when the recruiter allows them.

2. A real conversation, not a script

The AI speaks, listens, and responds with sub-second latency. It asks the questions you configured for the role, and when an answer contains something worth exploring (“I rebuilt the onboarding flow and churn dropped”), it asks the follow-up a good interviewer would: “What specifically did you change?” That adaptivity is the difference between a screening conversation and a form.

3. Everything is captured

The conversation is transcribed as it happens. When it ends, the recruiter gets the full transcript, the recording, an AI-written summary, per-criteria scores, surfaced strengths, and things worth probing, all attached to the candidate in your pipeline. Everything the model produced is labelled as such, so you always know which parts a machine wrote.

4. Ranked, never rejected

The principle the whole product is built on: the AI never rejects anyone. It ranks and summarizes so a human can decide in minutes instead of days. You read the top of the list first, but the whole list is there, every candidate heard, and every decision is yours.

What about privacy?

Consent-first by design: candidates opt in to recording on screen, data is encrypted in transit, used only for the hiring process, and deletable on request. These are the boring, load-bearing parts of doing this responsibly, and they are built to GDPR principles from day one.

The fastest way to understand it is to be screened yourself: create a free account and send the first screening to your own phone. Three screening interviews free, no card.
